Yet another study has come out about the biggest causes of bird deaths…. And no it isn’t wind turbines; not even close…
A national survey by Environment Canada found that an estimated 196 million birds are killed by our feline friends. How does this number compare to all other causes of bird deaths? This number is much larger than all other human-linked causes of death COMBINED.
The next biggest killer? Power lines. They kill an estimated 25.6 million birds in Canada every year. Houses and vehicles follow at 22.4 million and 13.8 million respectively.
So what isn’t on this year’s list of bird killers? That’s right…. Wind turbines are not on the list, and so inconsequential that it isn’t even mentioned.
For all those anti-wind lobbyists so concerned about the welfare of our wildlife, and in particular the death of our birds, I hope you keep your cats indoors, or you may be the biggest contributor of all!
If you want to read the study yourself, it was recently published in a special issue of the Canadian electronic scientific journal Avian Conservation and Ecology.
