Study shows cats are the biggest bird killers; wind turbines don’t make the list

Yet another study has come out about the biggest causes of bird deaths…. And no it isn’t wind turbines; not even close…

wind turbines aren't killing birds

A national survey by Environment Canada found that an estimated 196 million birds are killed by our feline friends. How does this number compare to all other causes of bird deaths? This number is much larger than all other human-linked causes of death COMBINED.
The next biggest killer? Power lines. They kill an estimated 25.6 million birds in Canada every year. Houses and vehicles follow at 22.4 million and 13.8 million respectively.

So what isn’t on this year’s list of bird killers? That’s right…. Wind turbines are not on the list, and so inconsequential that it isn’t even mentioned.
For all those anti-wind lobbyists so concerned about the welfare of our wildlife, and in particular the death of our birds, I hope you keep your cats indoors, or you may be the biggest contributor of all!
If you want to read the study yourself, it was recently published in a special issue of the Canadian electronic scientific journal Avian Conservation and Ecology.

Well thank you very much for giving more people and excuse to be cruel and sadistic to cats. And by the way an ornithologist that I ran into at a bird sanctuary informed me that all species of birds are doing very well, thank you very much!

      Hi Gina,

People who are cruel to any animals do not need a reason to be cruel to them, they are just horrible people. I think it’s safe to say that this information will not give any sane person reason to harm cats.

      Thanks for your comment!
