Siemens secures the 500MW Bison Wind Energy Contract

maintenance agreement for wind farm and wind energy

Minnesota Power’s 500MW Bison Wind Energy Center, located in North Dakota, has contracted Siemens as the service and maintenance provider for their 149 wind turbines.

The terms of agreement state that Siemens will provide 10 years of service and maintenance for the D3 turbines which were installed between 2010-2012, during the first 3 phases of the wind farm. The agreement also includes the remaining turbines installed at the beginning of this year during phase 4. This last phase has increased the capacity of the wind farm to almost 500MW, making it the largest wind farm in North Dakota.

CEO of Siemens Wind Service and Renewables business, Mark Albenze said:

“Siemens and Minnesota Power have a long history of working together and this is a continuation of our ongoing collaboration”

“A committed supporter of renewable energy, Minnesota Power boasts the largest fleet of Siemens’ D3 turbines in the U.S. We look forward to working closely with them to help with the continued reliability, affordability and sustainability of their renewable energy projects.”

According to their press release, ‘The project delivers power via a 465-mile direct current transmission line that connects the Square Butte Substation in Center, North Dakota, to Minnesota Power’s Arrowhead substation near Duluth, Minnesota. With the commissioning of Bison 4 in January, Minnesota Power reached the state of Minnesota’s current 25 percent renewable standard for 2025 a decade early.’

With its strong winds Minnesota’s commitment to wind energy has greatly contributed to its success in achieving its renewables target.
